Company: We are a Tokyo-based startup developing cutting-edge language learning courses, materials, and other products. Our company is motivated by a desire to change the language learning industry, to teach students in ways they have never been taught before.

Job: This is a job tor someone with diverse interests and skills. Even it you haven't acted before, but enjoy performing (e.g. music, dance, etc.), we offer training to help you become comfortable on camera. You will also conduct translation and linguistic validation/analysis. This work primarily involves translation from English to Japanese, editing and review of translations, and linguistic analysis and validation. It also involves online consultation (regarding translation decisions, cultural analysis, etc.) and teamwork. You will need not only a strong interest in language and culture, but an ability to think deeply, logically, and analytically on your feet in real time and to be able to express yourself and your thoughts in English, both orally and in writing.

We develop courses and other instructional products to help people learn foreign languages. Right now, we are focused on products for English speakers who are studying Japanese. We also create YouTube videos, podcasts, and other social media content.

Our courses help people understand both culture and language, thus we focus on interesting cultural differences and friction points, as well as the cultural context for language. Our courses and products take the form of audiobooks, podcasts, articles and, coming later this year, video and other media. As such, much of our translation work revolves around dialogue scripts and other scripts that will be performed by voice actors and actors.

If you meet the requirements below, you will need to take two tests to confirm your elgibility for the job. The first test is a short translation test. If you pass the first test, you will be provided a brief linguistic and cultural analysis (linguistic validation) test. If both tests are passed, a 30 to 60-minute interview will be conducted.

Requirements:

Native-level Japanese.

Highly proficient or native-level English.

Excellent written and spoken communication skills.

Recommended but not required: Translation experience; an educational background in linguistics.

Recommended but not required: Experience (as a hobby or professionally) in the performing arts. This includes not just acting, but also music, dance, voice acting, etc.

Ideal: A strong interest in language and culture, as well as an interest in storytelling and performing. Someone who enjoys being analytical about language and cultural differences.

Bonus skills: Filmmaking skills such as camera operation, sound editing, video editing, etc., are all major bonuses in consideration for this position.

We do not require a TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge certificate, but if your TOEFL is below 95 or IELTS is below 7 or your Cambridge is below 180, then you likely do not meet our proficiency requirements for English. You will need to be able to speak English in real time at a very high level. You will need to be able to express yourself in spoke and written English in detail and at speed, with the capacity to articulate your thoughts in a highly descriptive and analytical manner.

This is a combination of hourly wage work and fixed-rate jobs. For example, payment for acting work may be at an hourly rate or a project-based rate, project depending. Translation is at a fixed rate, but if we consult with you about that translation in an online meeting, we will pay you at an hourly rate. Translation jobs, translation review jobs, etc., are at fixed rates. The amount of work can vary significantly depending upon our stage in product development and our development cycle. You will have the option to turn down a job (e.g. translation project) if it does not fit into your schedule. If things go well, there will be opportunity for significantly more work, promotion, etc.

This work is very flexible and is generally on a project-by-project basis. Applicants would have the opportunity to turn down a project due to holidays, exams, other work, etc.

This is partly remote and partly onsite at the studio in Shinjuku when we record scripts and other projects for courses, YouTube, Instagram, etc.

Acting and filmmmaking work are often at an hourly rate, but they can be on a project basis too. Translations are paid at a fixed rate in accordance with the length of the source text (which is in English). Reviews of translations are also paid at a fixed rate. If you complete a significant amount of work and do it at a high level of quality, we increase the fixed rates. Generally, doing more work and doing it well will increase your pay over time.

Online meeting/consultation work is paid at either an hourly or fixed rate, project depending.

We will also ask for any samples of your performance-related work (acting, singing, voice acting, dance, etc.). It is not required, however.

As aforementioned, you will be required to take a translation test (400 words or less).

The translation test, if passed, is followed by a cultural and linguistic analysis (linguistic validation) test.

If you pass the second test, we will conduct an online interview (60 minutes or less).

Work is on a project-by-project basis, so sometimes there will be periods of no work and then busier periods, depending on our development cycle.

If you perform very well, you will have the option to be promoted, earn more money, and take on different kinds of projects, as well as manage other people (only if you want to; it will also be OK to continue doing the kind of work described in this job post).
